It was named after the ship, "Ship John", which was grounded on the shoal in 1797. All 60 passengers were rescued, but the ship eventually sank. In 1877 a permanent lighthouse was built. This "Victorian" style cottage, with quaint paned windows and a copper roof, was placed atop a steel caisson foundation. It became fully automated in 1973 and is still a valuable aid to navigation. Today, with the return of the Striped Bass, this lighthouse with its rock foundation, is a favorite among fisherman. |
