Cape May Lighthouse
This 170 foot tall lighthouse is located at the southernmost tip of Cape May Point, NJ. After the two previous lighthouses were ruined by erosion, the present structure, built a thousand feet further inshore, was completed in 1859. Recently, the lighthouse has been repainted and restored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, who are leasing it from the U.S. Coast Guard. With it's 350,000 candle-powered light flashing once every fifteen seconds, Cape May lighthouse is still an important aid to navigation.
Nearby, where the waters of the Atlantic ocean meet the tidal currents of the Delaware Bay, the Cape May Rips are formed. During the fall months, fishermen from all over come to this area for the excellent Striped Bass fishing.
